Things to Stop Doing On Social Media in 2013

January 4, 2013

It’s a new year which means it’s time to make some resolutions! But here, we’re going to take a different approach. Instead of resolving to DO things, let’s look at some things we all should STOP doing on social media. Below are the top 3 things to stop doing on social media.

1. Swearing

This is clearly a no brainer for business accounts, but it is still important for individuals. What you put our on social media helps shape your online reputation, and talking like a sailor, while it may not offend everyone, will certainly offend some. You want to show your personality, but be clean about it. Offending people is one of the best ways to lose followers.

2. Automated posting across networks

As a business, each of your social networks as its own unique audience. That being said, why would you want to give all of them the same message by automatically sharing every Facebook post on G+, Twitter, etc. Be creative and customize your message for the audience you are trying to reach.

3. Hash tag over kill

Some social networks like Twitter and G+ use hash tags as a way of organizing posts with similar themes. So if I made a tweet about something that happened in the NFL, I may want to add a #NFL to that tweet in order to place it in front of people searching through that index. This is the proper way to use a hash tag. Focus on the content, and use 1 or 2 hash tags so that your post is indexed properly.
